What is SCHOOLing? What do we get from it?

School is not that bad. Some says it's tragic! The alarm going off at an indecent hour, the torture of getting out of bed, the stress of all that homework, books to read, essays to write... with your parents giving you the daily third degree to find out how many times you've been reprimanded by your teachers... to say nothing of how many tests you've failed or to say how many times you've been late! You'll ask me: "How can you say a nightmare like this isn't that bad?" I'll reply: "Anything can be a nightmare, if you consider only the negative aspects." There are lots of positive aspects about going to school... Is there really a CUTE reason? Maybe! You only want school to start so you can see your crush again? But, we don't go to school only because of our crushes! There's something even more important... And I am referring to those strange creatures also known as "friends." Some get such a bad opinion of school, but I'd like to remind everyone that it was at school that all of us first met!

What would you do if you don't go to school? Spend all day at home helping your Mom clean and cook? Take care of your little brother/sister? Do the grocery shopping? It doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun, right? But you'll say, you could spend time listening to music, surfing the internet, wandering from store to store... It sounds great, right? Though I bet you'd be bored stiff after one week! You'd end up being by yourself all day. Just like this summer vacation, agree?

Experience helps us discover what interests you the most. And you get part of that experience at school. It allows us to broaden and deepen our knowledge, so we can learn what we like and what we're good at. Take for instance - you love to travel. We have to explore these things more fully. Do you think you don't need to be stuck inside a classroom every day for that? Will it be much easier to simply travel the world with your dollars? Well, it won't be that easier to travel the world without any knowledge. Let me remind you that before you set out, you might want to find out where the country you're going to is located, learn the language, map out an itinerary... even taking a trip requires you to use your brain and STUDY up on lots of things - which is exactly the stuff we should be trying to learn in school, besides all the homework and the grades. Going to school is better than staying at home doing the household chores.

Here's an incomplete list of my recent classmates.

A-chi, the Shy Lass: She doesn't appear to be a jerk. There's a hesitant look in her eyes, though most of the time she looks down at her shoes. She turns a bright shade of red whenever she's forced to speak out loud in class.

Amer, Mr. Nice Guy: Everyone likes him. He's always telling jokes and keeps the whole class in stitches. He even makes the teacher laugh. We always have fun when he's around.

Lappang, the Fan: She lives for Anime! She's obsessed with it.

Abrar, Mr. Tranquil: He may be the biggest computer whiz in class, and as a friend, he's definitely playful.

Zareen, Miss Splendid: She has everything a girl could ever want: the nicest friends, the trendiest clothes. Bearable!

"Of course, what makes SCHOOL so special is that it's the PLACE WHERE some of your most important and LONG-LASTING FRIENDSHIPS BEGIN, which often go well BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WALLS."
